I lived in Arequipa, Peru from September 2011 to November 2012. I taught English, practiced Muay Thai, and got really into learning Peruvian slang. I also visited Lima, Cuzco, Colca Canyon, and Playa Mollendo.

I’m always down for a good protest, but these teachers are really screwing up public transportation. Which means I’ll be dropping off my laundry tomorrow. 

Monday is a holiday here, celebrating a naval battle that Peru lost to Chile. I asked my students why Peru would have a holiday in honor of a loss, to which they responded, “Peru doesn’t win a lot of anything, but we have a street named after the captain ‘Miguel Grau’, so for us, it’s a holiday”. Fair enough I suppose.

Come at me bro! There were about 15 or so police with riot shields casually chatting against a wall, some eating ice cream which was a bit of a juxtaposition. (Did I use that word correctly?) Glad I didn’t have to find out what they were ‘preparing’ for if one can call eating ice cream a 'preparation’ activity. 

After reading about Syria EVERY DAY for the past week or so, I can’t help but wonder when it will stop. The news is quite depressing these days. On a completely unrelated note, TGIF.

The police station I pass everyday to the gym. Following that are coca leaves that I bought for 1 sol (.37 cents) on the street (calm down Americans, they are legal). Last is a picture of a typical house in Arequipa. Square, modern looking, and the majority are 2 stories. Color is abundant and for a moment, the architecture makes you forget that you are walking a half mile incline to get to a corner store.
